Wall Art: the photography of Philip Rubin

“Wall art is transient: the duration of the existence of a piece is indeterminate and is often subject to the vagaries of the elements, urban development and decay and time; the medium, instead of being canvas, is architectural - brick, metal, stucco, drainpipes, windows, doors, etc.; the artist is often unknown;  the passing of time and the public venues invite unanticipated collaboration.”

The photos on this website are by Philip Rubin. They are selections from a book presently in development called Wall Art that features art that appears in public places, including murals, painted buildings, and a variety of street art. Since the 1970s, Rubin has been photographing in urban locations around the world, concentrating on pictures of wall art, including murals, graffiti, and painted buildings. His photography has been featured at a number of shows including “What You Write? A Graffiti Show” at the Small Space Gallery at the Arts Council of Greater New Haven; “Philip Rubin: Photographs of Urban Art” at the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport; “This and That” at the City Lights Gallery in Bridgeport, New Haven Opens Studios, and others.

All art on this site is copyright of the original artist(s). Rubin has attempted to determine the origin of pieces and authorship, where and when possible. Permission will be solicited prior to any book publication. Because of the transient and collaborative nature of some of the art and the “hit-and-run” nature of the photography, it can often be difficult to establish ownership. Your help is needed. If you are an artist of any of these pieces, or know the artist(s), please contact Philip Rubin at prubin49@gmail.com.

No art on this site is currently for sale. All previous profits from sale of these photographs were donated to IRIS: Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services, in New Haven, Connecticut (irisct.org).
